From Heroine to Women

Despite their contributions, women’s rights were often overlooked. They were denied the right to vote, to own property, or to pursue higher education. It was not until the early 20th century that the feminist movement began to gain traction in Slovakia.

After World War II, Slovakia became a part of the Socialist Republic of Czechoslovakia. The socialist government promoted gender equality, and women made significant progress in all areas of society. However, the socialist government also restricted freedom of speech and assembly, and women were often denied the opportunity to participate fully in political life.

After the collapse of the socialist regime in 1989, Slovakia became an independent country. The new government committed to promoting gender equality, and women have made further progress in recent years. However, challenges remain. Women are still underrepresented in politics and the workplace, and they continue to face discrimination and violence.
