Sedgwick was born in Cornwall, Connecticut, in 1813. He graduated from West Point in 1837 and served in the Mexican-American War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed colonel of the 4th New York Infantry. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by 1862 he was commanding a division in the Army of the Potomac.
