Description

In the tumultuous and transformative era of 13th century England, King Henry III ascended to the throne, inheriting a kingdom plagued by strife and division. His long and eventful reign would be marked by both triumphs and setbacks, as he fought to maintain control amidst a series of challenges that threatened to tear the kingdom apart.

Henry’s early years were dominated by the regency of William Marshal, a powerful and respected magnate who helped to stabilize the kingdom after the tumultuous reign of King John. However, once Henry came of age, he began to assert his own authority, leading to a clash with the barons who had grown accustomed to ruling in his name. This conflict culminated in the Barons’ Revolt of 1215, which forced Henry to accept the Provisions of Oxford, a series of reforms that limited his power.

Despite the Provisions of Oxford, Henry eventually managed to regain control of his kingdom. He embarked on a series of reforms, including the reform of the Exchequer, the law, the Church, the military, and the royal household. He also led England into a number of wars, including the war with Scotland, the war with Wales, and the war with France.

Henry’s reign was also marked by a number of significant events, including the appointment of Hubert de Burgh as Justiciar, the fall of de Burgh, the rise of Peter des Roches, the struggle over taxation, and the Provisions of Westminster. He also participated in the Albigensian Crusade and the Emperor Frederick II’s crusade to the Holy Land.

Henry’s reign came to an end in 1272, after more than fifty years on the throne. He was succeeded by his son, Edward I, who would go on to become one of England’s most famous and successful kings.

“His Century” delves into the fascinating and complex world of Henry III’s reign, shedding light on the challenges he faced, the reforms he enacted, and the legacy he left behind. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in English history, medieval politics, or the life of one of England’s most enigmatic monarchs.
