Description

In this definitive history of Pickett’s Charge, Pasquale De Marco offers a fresh perspective on one of the most famous and tragic events of the American Civil War. Drawing on extensive research, Pasquale De Marco provides a detailed and nuanced account of the battle from both the Union and Confederate viewpoints.

Pickett’s Charge was the culmination of a series of Confederate victories that had pushed the Union Army back to the outskirts of Washington, D.C. Confederate General Robert E. Lee hoped that a massive attack on the Union center would break through the Union lines and force a Union retreat, and possibly even capture Washington, D.C.

To this end, Lee ordered General George Pickett to lead a massive infantry assault against the Union center. Pickett’s division was supported by artillery fire from General James Longstreet’s corps. The Union defenders, under General George Meade, were well-entrenched and had a clear field of fire.

The Confederate attack began at dawn on July 3, 1863. Pickett’s men advanced across a mile-wide field, under heavy fire from the Union artillery and infantry. They reached the Union lines and engaged in a fierce hand-to-hand fight. But the Union troops held their ground, and the Confederates were eventually forced to retreat.

Pickett’s Charge was a costly failure. The Confederates lost over 10,000 men, including General Pickett himself. The Union victory at Gettysburg marked a turning point in the Civil War. The Confederacy never again mounted a major offensive, and the Union went on to win the war in 1865.

Pasquale De Marco masterfully weaves together the stories of the individual soldiers who fought in Pickett’s Charge, from the generals to the privates. Pasquale De Marco also provides a detailed analysis of the military strategies and tactics that were used by both sides. The result is a comprehensive and engaging account of one of the most important battles in American history.
