Description

William Wallace was a true pioneer in Canadian aviation, a man whose passion for flying and dedication to exploring new frontiers left an indelible mark on the development of aviation in Canada.

Born in Montreal in 1895, Wallace’s fascination with aviation began at an early age. He built his first aircraft in 1910 and soloed the following year, becoming one of the first Canadians to fly. His pioneering spirit led him to explore the vast and unforgiving Canadian North, where he made numerous flights into remote and uncharted territories, mapping and surveying the land, and delivering supplies and mail to isolated communities.

During the First World War, Wallace served as an instructor, training fighter pilots and navigators. He later commanded No. 2 Observer School, responsible for training aircrew for the Royal Flying Corps. Wallace’s wartime experiences honed his skills and leadership abilities, preparing him for the challenges that lay ahead.

After the war, Wallace returned to civilian life and dedicated himself to developing commercial aviation in Canada. He played a key role in establishing new air routes and promoting air travel. As Superintendent of Canadian Airways and later as Director of Northern Development, Wallace oversaw the growth and development of the aviation industry in Canada, particularly in the remote and undeveloped regions of the North.

Wallace’s lifelong dedication to aviation earned him recognition and accolades. He received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in the country. His legacy as a pioneer and innovator in Canadian aviation continues to inspire generations of aviators.
